Christina Chi is a designer leather handbag and accessories company, based in London who specialise in producing handcrafted leather handbags and accessories working in partnership with artisans in Spain. Christina Chi’s focus is now on expanding their collection, bespoke offerings and collaborations with a sustainability focus.
What is the ethos of Christina Chi?
The ethos of our brand is very simple. We want to empower and inspire. Most importantly use our platform to leave long lasting effects in the industry such as to incorporate a foundation.
What drew you to design handbags in particular?
I worked for a number of brands in retail Selfridges and Liberty of London which inspired me to start my own handbag company.What I love about designing bags is the conceptual nature, working in 3rd dimension for a product that has a purpose. Also knowing that a bag you can create can have lasting legacy for many years to come is the ultimate appeal to me.
Did you face any challenges in launching the brand?
There are many challenges to starting a brand I think the biggest challenge is a personal one. Overcoming your doubts staying positive and motivated.
Other challenges include sourcing the right suppliers. The best thing to do is talk to as many people as possible and ask for recommendations. Also do not be put off by the cynical, know-it-all people, you will meet alot along the way.
Are there any fashion influences or inspirations behind the bags?
I use my Pinterest account (christinachiuk) and pin a lot of my inspirations. The main inspiration is the woman herself, a successful, well-balanced, empowering woman. For example I love the nature and character of Michelle Obama. Then I look to the style of the 60’s and 70’s, I really like character of vintage bags which you can see has been influenced by our collection. I love working with rich colours and I am inspired by nature.
What is your favourite part of the creative process?
My favourite part of the creative process is the end process! It sounds funny but I am not at rest until I can see all my ideas come together in the finished article. I also like creating images and bringing themes together, as well as meeting with people and suppliers to source leather and materials.
What’s in store for Christina Chi in 2016?
In 2016 we are planning to release more beautiful pieces, establish our sales accounts at home and abroad and with a planned launch event in London in the autumn.
