I would honestly say that my favourite aspect of the fashion blogging world is when I’m introduced to a brand that I instantly fall in love with. This exact feeling has been my experience with SUKEINA. SUKEINA is a womenswear and accessories brand that was founded by the outstandingly talented Omar Salam. Salem was trained at Parsons and then went on to work for acclaimed fashion houses Sonia Rykiel and Christian Lacroix before launching SUKEINA in 2008.
How would I describe the SUKEINA woman in my own words? Confident, dynamic, and forward looking. Let’s just say that if you happened to be wearing the Delta Suit (here) for example, you would be holding every gaze in the room. Just look at SUKEINA’S Imaan Collection (here), you’ll have a hard time disagreeing with my choice of words.
What does the name SUKEINA stand for? Salem named SUKEINA after his late mother, and it means bright light which serves as a homage, but also an expression of all the possibilities of creation once light is introduced. I also feel as though I can strongly relate to Salem’s personal background. Salem is originally from Senegal but has lived in Africa, Europe, and is currently based in New York City. As a Nigerian living in London, I feel as though I can recognise and deeply appreciate this universality in his designs. Isn’t the whole point of fashion to be an extension of ourselves and communicate who we are to the world? In the effortlessly eloquent words of Salem himself, “Clothing is a language within itself”.
